Frequented San Francisco clubs in the 2010s searching for quality house music? Then there’s a good chance you’ve been to a party by As You Like It (AYLI). The promoter consistently hosted local and internationally-acclaimed artists—including the Blessed Madonna (formerly the Black Madonna), Bicep, Peggy Gou, DJ Koze, and Nicolas Jaar—at Monarch, Public Works, and other Bay Area clubs and underground venues.
Accelerated by the pandemic’s effect on events, AYLI founder Jeremy Bispo just launched As You Like It Recordings, a new record label focused on Bay Area artists making acid, disco, house, techno, and beyond. Ascent/Descent EP, the label’s first release, spotlights two original mixes by Christina Chatfield: “Ascent” (an uptempo, sinewy take on the 303) and “Descent” (a longer, more heady trip closer to 120 BPM). Originally from the Midwest, Chatfield studied sound design at Berklee College of Music before moving to SF and becoming a resident of AYLI.
In addition to remixes by artists based in Indianapolis (Lisa Smith aka Noncompliant), Vienna (Johannes Auvinen aka Tin Man), and Berlin (Lily Ackerman), the digital-only version of the EP features a late-night come-down mix by Oakland’s own Tape Ghost.
Sadly, we still can't gather and dance all night long, but you're welcome to join AYLI's launch for the label, streaming live on Fault Radio on December 19 from 6-10 PM PT.
Stream the single anywhere or pick up the 12” vinyl on Bandcamp.
