Cold Beat at Grace Cathedral: Our next live showcase features the synth punk band accompanied by a choir and organist
Listen to new Bay Area music by Shipwreck Detective, Patrick Cowley, Kevin Nichols, Talk Show, Deuce Eclipse, Rayven Justice, Sarchasm, and more
I have some epic news to announce.
For our next showcase, White Crate is proud to present a limited-capacity performance by synth pop band Cold Beat at the iconic Grace Cathedral in downtown San Francisco. This will mark their first major performance of songs from War Garden, and it will be no typical show: The four-piece will be joined by the War Garden Choir—especially assembled for this event—as well as Christopher Keady (Interim Director of Music at Grace Cathedral), who will be playing the cathedral’s 7,466-pipe Charles B. Alexander Memorial Organ, one of the first American classic style organs and among the largest church organs in the West. Did I say epic?
This one will sell out, so get your tickets today!
Peace,
ronny
BITTERSWEET SLUDGE PUNK
It was my dream in high school to move to the Bay Area and pursue music further. Many of my favorite artists hailed from SF and so it just felt like it was where I should go if I want to surround myself with what I love.
We lost another great one to LA. As it turns out, last week’s Slangiversary (6 Year Slang Church Anniversary) show at Bandcamp HQ in downtown Oakland was the final performance for Kevin Nichols and his band as a Bay Area-based group, according to the artist’s recent Instagram post. As a parting gift, Nichols released Disappointest (Demos, Outtakes, & Oddities 2015-2019) as a pay-what-you-want exclusive on Bandcamp. The 21-track collection features work from the era of Disappointer, rough and tumble don’t-give-a-damn grungy sludgy punk rock fantastic for blasting as you cruise around Oakland—or maybe for your six-hour roadtrip south.
A GIFT OF SF DISCO FUNK
I once read some random comment by a random person on a random messageboard on the Internet bemoaning the fact that Dark Entries Records keeps releasing music from the Patrick Cowley archives—their argument being that there was a reason that stuff never got released in the 80s. It’s a stupid thing for me to remember, but also a really great reminder to never read random dumb comments by random dumb people on the Internet. Malebox is the latest gift unearthed by Dark Entries, and it’s a bit of a return: While the last few Patrick Cowley re-releases have focused on his lesser-known alternative sides (like performance troupe rehearsals, extended live funk jams, and erotic gay sex fantasies), this new release sounds like a lot of the artist’s official discography—pure hi NRG, passionate beats, and disco funk for days.
PIECE OF PEACE
My set follows the many thoughts and feelings I've had across the past few years. I am hesitant to specify the exact emotions, as I prefer listeners be able to project themselves into the music and (hopefully) relate to it in their own way.
You know the deal: Soaring synths, ambient glory. Live at the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival is the latest offering by shipwreck detective, aka Devanand Addison Bhat. Recorded live at the Lab for the 21st annual SFEMF this past September, the 20-min performance features one of the city’s most consistent ambient producers tapping into the art and potential expressive power of sound through nearly a dozen synthesizers and samplers. For those still unfamiliar, Bhat’s music is ambient music that seems to exist outside of space and time, slowly unfolding like a flower, easily gliding moment to moment like a gull suspended in sky. Play it when you need peace.
