Cumbia as only the Bay does it: Come dance to Mariposas del Alma y Discos Resaca Collective at the Chapel on January 18!
New releases from 4d. on Hot Record Societe, Blues Lawyer on Dark Entries, plus Silver Shores, Chris Keys, Lyrics Born, Mahsa Vahdat, Mount Westmore, and more
Big news! We’re super excited to announce our next local showcase in partnership with the Chapel in SF: Mariposas del Alma y Discos Resaca Collective are headlining with support from Louda y Los Bad Hombres and DJ sets by Chulita Vinyl Club.
We’ve been obsessed with San Jose’s Discos Resaca Collective for the past couple years as they have released some of the Bay Area’s finest Latin music. Their 2020 album Y Te Cuento got us through early pandemic lockdowns with an eclectic mix of boleros, corridos, cumbia, cha cha, and midtempo soul. Their 2022 release East Side San Jose: Back in the Day in ESSJ blew our minds with its “spin the radio dial” Latin eclecticism, deftly adding freestyle and hip hop to the mix. We’re looking forward to seeing what Mariposas del Alma y Discos Resaca Collective have cooking up for us, but we’re sure they’ll leave us in a soulful, sweaty mess on the dance floor.
San Francisco’s Louda y Los Bad Hombres will open the show with their potent nuevo Latinx-RnB fueled blend of jazz, soul, cumbia, and beyond. Plus, we’re honored to have two badass DJs from Chulita Vinyl Club spinning eclectic records across Latinidad before, between, and long after the bands have played.
We’ll see you at the Chapel on Wednesday, January 18th! Tickets available here.
Peace,
ronny
BEATS TO PONDER BY
Ask most people to define hip hop, and they’ll likely talk to you about raps and beats. But if you go a level deeper, you realize that hip hop is really the art of the sample—not just in the literal sense of sampling sounds on a record, but in the wider sense of listening to the world, processing those observations, and then producing something new from your own perspective. That something new could be the poetry of a flow or the thump and rap of a beat. Though mostly instrumental, Tender Buttons manages to do both. The latest album by Oakland producer 4d., released on Hot Record Societe, samples from movies, TV shows, music (Pink Floyd, Janet Jackson, Biz Markie), and beyond. It’s awash in nostalgia, longing, wondering, pondering. It’s a personal work, you just know it, but it’s also widely spacious and open to interpretation. Best of all, the beats are golden. For even more from 4d., be sure to subscribe to SMARTBOMB on Patreon to get access to the producer’s newest 50-min mix.
SPIRIT-LIFTING TWEE
“I want to stop talking about the way things used to be.” Going through changes in your relationships? We all know it can be tough, but maybe a little twee indie pop with relatable lyrics can help lift your spirits. “Chance Encounters” by Oakland’s Blues Lawyer is the first single from their upcoming album All in Good Time, due out on Dark Entries Records on February 17. The new song, which will also be the album opener, features the typically addictive hook we’ve come to expect from lead singer and songwriter Rob I. Miller that eventually builds to a stomping crescendo—all dedicated to the simple admissions of change, growth, love.
STRAIGHT-AHEAD ROCK
The debut self-titled EP by East Bay band Silver Shores has arrived, delivering six tracks of feel-good, easy-going pop rock simple and direct to the soul. Midtempo beats, guitars electric and acoustic intertwined, and gently sung, loving lyrics—instead of trying to be groundbreaking and revolutionary, it’s simply present and peaceful. Recommended for lovers of gray days, chicken soup, and modern rock.
