FOG MODE IN FULL EFFECT
There’s hella good hip hop out right now. Scroll down past the neoclassical and punk, and you’ll see link after link after link to hyphy Bay shit. But there’s only one new album out right now that’s deeply, intensely, proudly, unapologetically Frisco, and that’s Sucka Repellent by Dregs One. Released on their own label Audio Vandals and featuring guest appearances by Husalah, DJ.Fresh, Cellski, DinaRo, Spice 1, and Frisco Baby, the new album from the fog mode maestro ruminates on living as a rap cat in the SF city life, from walking through the Tenderloin and getting geeked up to what it means to live as a true player and win in the rap game. As usual, it sounds like classic Bay underground hip hop, bumped and boosted for a new era. And there’s no mistaking that: Rooted in the classics that came before, a new era of SF hip hop has arrived. Join Dregs One for the album release party at Public Works on Friday, October 7 with support from City P, Grand-O, TroyLLF, JourneyBthaReason, Frisco Baby plus DJ sets by Abby Imperial and Baghead.
VIOLIN FOLK DANCE, WARPED
“While we know Harrison for his danceable fusions of Western and Eastern musics, the Sonata finds the composer enthralled with Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone method. Not content to merely mimic, Harrison developed a technique of serial manipulation of intervals he termed ‘interval controls’ that he first fully realized in this piece.”
Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin is a seven-minute avant-garde classical piece composed in 1936 by Lou Harrison, an artist who first studied under Henry Cowell at San Francisco State University and later went on to teach music himself at Mills College, San Jose State University, and beyond. Performed by Kate Stenberg, recorded by Zach Miley at Oakland’s 25th Street Recording Studio, and released by Other Minds Records, this new rendition of old music stirs, stretches, bends, and collapses the sonic possibilities of a single violin, all while maintaining a folk dance quality.
TWEE GRUNGE, SWEET THRUM
Not quite as threatening as its cover’s bloody watercolors suggest, Bloodlust by MOP is the latest EP recorded and released by Oakland’s Smoking Room, featuring six short songs of twee-meets-grunge. The duo of Moira Brown and Samuelito Cruz layer a quartet’s worth of instruments, stacking guitar, bass, and drums into a fluid stream of hazy, fuzzy thrum, with Brown’s sweet voice cutting through it all. You can pick up a limited edition cassette of the EP on Bandcamp.
