"It’s queer, it’s radical, it’s us." Interview with Lalin St. Juste of Black queer arthouse 7000COILS
New albums from spectral noise producer Mind Mirage on Psychic Eye and lo-fi indie stalwarts Flowertown, plus our weekly show recommendations in the Bay Area
WC04—a continuation of our event series curated by Bay Area artists and collectives—takes place the afternoon of Saturday, March 30th at El Rio on their sunny back patio. And it’s our pleasure to introduce the curator for this special event: 7000COILS. More than an independent local label, 7000COILS is a nexus of Blackness, Queerness, and Wellness—and they have arranged a powerful meeting of art and community for WC04, featuring live performers, DJ sets, and a variety of vendors.
One of the founders of 7000COILS, Lalin St. Juste is an impressive sonic alchemist in her own right, offering up solo experimentation under her own name as well as performing as the lead vocalist for electro pop group The Seshen.

FINE SPECTRAL NOISE
The electronics in Chaos Carousel by Mind Mirage (aka Ana Cuevas) ooze like an otherworldly sap. There’s a compelling austerity here, playing with out-of-time expanses and then returning the incantation to a commanding earth-beat. Cuevas’ artistry plants deep roots, only to be unearthed by eager hands and a hungry heart. This is music to get lost in, to allow to fill the body completely— now an overflowing vessel, the body brims with emotion and newfound clarity. Chaos Carousel is delightfully unconventional and generative in a sea of already unconventional dark electronic music. Laden with almost forgotten memories and caught in the webs of a spiraling subconscious, this is spectral noise at its finest. Allow it to latch onto the mind, fester, then emerge transformed.

SLOW LOFI UNWINDING
“It’s no good trying to place your hand
Where I can’t see, because I understand
That you’re different from me”— Syd Barrett, “No Good Trying”
My appreciation for Tourist Language—the new album by Flowertown on Paisley Shirt Records—rose from “high” to “utter extremes” at the mini album’s penultimate track, a cover of Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett’s solo song “No Good Trying.” But maybe that’s just showing my biases. The rest of the album features seven pure Flowertown originals, coolly, calmly cradling the band’s signature foggy coastal drive, slow lo-fi winding and unwinding. Check out the music video for “The Ring.”
