MAGIC IS REAL
A year following the original album release, MAHAL by Toro y Moi gets the full live treatment with MAHAL (Live from Big Sur). Recorded live at Fernwood Resort along the central coast on September 23, 2022, the new work sees Chaz Bear’s group playing through the full album in its original order. Sunny psychedelia swirling into foggy rhythm and blues, the album is all about love of self, one’s ancestors and descendants, and the places we inhabit. The original album cover and music video for “The Loop” specifically highlighted the unique natural beauty and diverse human beauty of the Bay Area, but Big Sur is not too far off, a close relative, a spiritual cousin—the perfect place to explore these blissed out, heartful sounds.

MONEY POWER PUSSY
“We want to separate hip-hop culture from pimp culture, which mirrors the exploitation and domination of colonialism, slavery and racial capitalism.”
Maddy Clifford, artist and co-host of ‘What’s Pimpin’?’
“What’s Pimpin’?” You could write an essay about it, or you could make hip hop. A new video series from KQED does both, enlisting MCs RyanNicole, Madlines, and Coco Peila to explore and expose the stark reality of pimp culture and trafficking in the Bay Area—and its prevalence in hip hop culture.
“It’s a wicked smile with some dimples.” It’s money, power, pussy, and more whipped into a seductive, capitalist-damned beast of a thing, and every facet of it comes into clear relief on the trio’s new track dropped today. Bars fast and bullshit-free fly at top speed until the hook arrives to lay it all out in black and white:
Pussy
Ice
Money
Price
Power
Intelligence
Monetary
Prevalence

HIGH OCTANE DANCE WORKOUTS
SF-based transatlantic rave dealer Chrissy is back with another dose of high-octane dance floor workouts. Released on Dansu Discs, The Other Side EP starts off with wailing Sylvester-esque vocals layered over thumping bass, skittering breakbeats, and nostalgic vamping piano house. The B-side “The Only One” takes us on a slower (for Chrissy anyway) glitched out acid trip. The EP includes a bassy spaced out remix of the B-side by Manchester’s Yosh. While Chrissy spends a lot of time playing across Europe, he still blesses us with regular appearances in the Bay. See you on the dance floor!
